The Mouvement Européen Seine-Maritime (ME76) was founded by Bernadette BRAS, a school teacher, in May 1978. It was her ambition then, and it still is “to enforce the necessary conditions to achieve the United States of Europe by creating bonds and joining together the political, economic and cultural ties between the States that are part of the European Union”.

ME 76 is part of the European Movement – France (MEF). Our association brings together, regardless of their political affiliations, men, women and associations who wish to support actively the European construction in a federal perspective. Its vocation is to « develop among the French, an awareness of what Europe is about and of the common destinies of the peoples which compose Europe« . The European France Movement has also been certified as a « complementary educational association for public education » by the Ministry of National Education, and an association recognized as being of general interest since July 22nd 2016.

Asserting a local and international influence

The ME-F is the French branch of the International European Movement, present not only among the 27 Member States of the European Union, but also in other European countries. Moreover, the MEF is important association, present throughout France, gathering more than 50 local sections that act as relays for the action of the MEF.

The European Movement (an International association) was brought about by Resistance movements at the end of the Second World War.

In the days of the Liberation, numerous associations supporting the idea of a united Europe and peace among peoples appeared all over the continent. The delegates of the different movements met in the Congress of Europe in The Hague in May 1948; they built the European Movement in order to give a permanent character to their action. The French Organization of the European Movement was created in 1949.

The European Movement is, interestingly enough at the origin of the Council of Europe, created on May 5th, 1949, and of the European Convention on Human Rights. It also contributed to the creation of the College of Europe in Bruges and of the European Cultural Center in Geneva.

Its reflections and projects inspired Jean Monnet, when the later proposed to Robert Schuman, in April 1950, the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the foundation stone of the European Community and current the European Union.

Since then, the European Movement and its members has supported the successive stages of European construction. They campaigned for the election of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage, then for the Treaty on the European Union. They carry on to making concrete proposals to bring Europe closer to its citizens and to make the realities of European integration better known.
